Interviewing MW Brother IURIE SEDLEȚCHI Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Moldova

by Claudiu Ionescu

Most Worshipful Brother Iurie, I congratulate you for the recent recognition of Grand Lodge of Moldova by the United Grand Lodge of England!

Our file has been with the Mother Grand Lodge of the World for several years now. And we did not expect that – that it would be solved this year. But, see, a letter came, when it was all decided, on March 10, 2010: the Grand Lodge of Moldova was recognized by the United Grand Lodge of England. It is a joy and we receive is a promotion, that we may work even better.

How many international recognitions do you have?

Now, with this one that just arrived, we have over 50. In February, the Conference of the Grand Lodges of the North American States has recognized the regularity of the Grand Lodge of Moldova. I guess the more than 50 American Grand Lodges are waiting for us… I guess roundabout the end of 2009, we received the recognition of the Grand Lodge of China.

How is life in Moldova?

After the last elections, when the democrats came to power, the purpose or the objective for us is to transform Moldova into a democratic state. And to bring Moldova into the European Union. And you can see that we are really shouldering our burden and with our efforts we are trying to further this process.

The relationship with the National Grand Lodge of Romania is great. We are looking to find some common projects for co-operation.

Something to re-brand us. Things that the Grand Lodge of Moldova can promote in the country. To repair somehow the image ruined by the last government.

The communists said that we only do evil things, that we overthrow governments. And this word, the word mason – in Moldova – is a negative word. If you must – if you want to kill someone publicly who has a political career, you have to write this: he is a mason. And they wrote that about both about those who were and those who were not, because they were settling scores with them.

And that is why it is such an important task for us to try and show however the real, objective essence of the Masonic movement. Because it is not a secret organization, as many people have written: you can see, we are an official organization, registered with the Ministry of Justice.

Did you think of common projects with Romania?

I would accept anything – any proposal about any project that would do some good to our country. We have a great need of projects right now, because, if you look at it, I work in education and am looking for collaboration with the universities. Even opening local branches of Romanian universities. I would want to try and see whethere it is possible to be accredited, our university over there, after the Romanian rules.

Our diplomas are not valid in Romania. You did not know that, did you? Well, if you graduated the Faculty of Law in Chișinău, it does not matter whether private or public, and you want to work in Romania, you have to take at least 10 more exams, to have the nostrum done, or what is it called – to accredit our diploma with something here. But here, graduates from Romanian universities work no problem. Moldova is also part of the Bologna process.

How are things with your Grand Lodge’s library?

We have an organized library, but it is small. And whenever we have the possibility, we buy books. If you please, whoever reads these lines and has the possibility to help us, we need Masonic literature.

Masonic Forum Magazine, absolutely, is in the library. I do not spread it around, I offer it on a subscription. And I have a complaint, in the Masonic Forum magazine, maybe you could have pieces more often on the Grand Lodge of Moldova...
